Following earlier efforts to re-ignite SHGs following the political turmoil of 2021, the Share Trust partnered with Afghanaid to support 40 SHGs (800 women) in North Afghanistan with funding from The Vitol Foundation. A key objective was to pilot the potential of SHGs to self-replicate by enabling “star leaders” from existing groups to establish new SHGs and cascade training; and to test the viability and impact of channelling microgrants to women via SHGs. The findings underscore the value of SHGs as powerful mechanisms for enhancing women’s psychosocial and economic capacities, wellbeing, and resilience; and provide a compelling case for embedding SHGs at the centre of programming to scale informal assistance to women in challenging context.
